turblow 4oh's

Talk about engines & Transmissions here.

Postby spudster on Fri Feb 01, 2008 5:48 pm

well I decided not to run my 275,000 mile 4oh as it was. Once I dump the boost to it, it was probably gonna fog everone off the track. so I took it apart and took the block in to get bored. It come back today and made a nice .030 over block. Me and klvn8r got a good deal on some eagle rods last year, so I guess it would be dumb not to use them. likewise it would be dumb not to use forged pistons, so I got some low compression forged pistons comin too. I oughta have an engine that don't lube the track down and blow chunks at least. that wouldn't bring too many chuckles yaknow.

I'm planning on modifying the factory "tubular" exhaust for the turbo I have. It will be cut off at the two tubes near the motor mount area, and two new tubes added and routed to the steering pump area. then I'll add the flange so it can be supported by the bosses on the block and manifold for the steering pump bracket. the turbo exhaust housing has a divided entry, so the engine is divided into 3 cylinders per side. it spools the turbine faster this way, so i'm going to build the exhaust to take advantage of this. The turbo is a schwietzer{ borg warner} "S2E" that makes about 55 lbs. of air per minute. These turbo's are bad ass little units and spool up fast. they have some interesting design features. the unit I have works best at 21 lbs of boost. Ihave another unit without a internal wastegate that will make even more boost. If that ain't enough I have an S3 that makes 65 lbs of air a second, enough for about 700 hp. The turbo croud is just starting to discover this turbo. this engine is going into the free P.O.S. javelin Craig gave me. Lots of free junk from various people is going into this car. So much free junk I decided to build a decent short block :D

Man that is inspriring....

I can't wait to get back in the garage...I have a little bit of sanding left on the barracuda engine compartment then I'll shoot a little paint. Let that dry and drop the 360/727 right into it.

So spud, what other little 4.0 tricks are up your sleeve. Does a project like that need a better than average head gasket or head studs??

I don't really have any 4.0 tricks. I never messed with one before. thats what is interesting about it. My trick with the 4oh is get as much power out of it before 5200 rpm, when it starts getting the shakes. how fast can I go? i dunno, thats why I'm doing it. it's something different.

I work Friday, so I get off-duty on Saturday morning. I hate to get you up early, but if you want me to swing by on my way home, I probably can. Lemme know.
